Kohra, a small remote village about 50kms from the industrial city of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, India, seems to have being ignored by all hints of development to-date. The village has no electricity, no running water, no roads, no proper housing and no modern sanitation facilities. We do not think the village features on any map, however about 6000 people live there and call the place home.
Most of the people in the village continue to do subsistence farming, however, due to increase in family size over generations, the land holdings have consistently got smaller and people have become poorer with time. Most families are not able to provide quality education (and any other basic requirement) to their kids and hence the childrens’ future had become bleak with time.
Our endeavor is to reverse this process and we have started from the very basic need; that of quality education. Our plan is to set-up (and continuously build) a quality school and impart high standard of education to kids in this village and other villages close by, at costs which are affordable for the poor family.
We believe, if given an opportunity, the talented kids of the village and that of the neighboring villages can make a super future for themselves. Quality education would ensure that they are in a position to excel in a competitive environment of life and not be left behind.
But they do need a little help to start off.
We started work on establishing Adharshila, the school in the winter of year 2004 with the intention to develop a modern educational institution, better in terms of quality then all the option available, at a cost of education which even the poor families of the village could afford, without any hardship. The 1st session of the school started in the 2005 session and since then the school has been growing by leaps and bounds. It has also been having an impact on the other facilities in the village.
